"Part": A part can be any unit of WEIGHT you wish to use. For example 1 Gram or 1 Pound. 1 pound of dried Chamomile flowers will be much larger in volume (appearance) then 1 pound of Valerian root, which is heavier, so units of measure such as measuring cups or spoons, should not be used.
Small scales for weighing things can be purchased at office supply stores and/or some “smoking accessories” shops. A scale that weighs as little as one or two grams is recommended since 1 or 2 grams is about the right size to use as your “Part” when making herbal recipes.
Basic Recipe, Medicinal:
Use this method for making your own recipes…
3 parts medicinal herbs
1 part aromatic or spice
1 part demulcent
For the following recipes 1 Part = 2 grams.
Recipe, Headache decoction:
1 part Wood Betony, 1 part Chamomile, 1 part Lavender, (these are the medicinal herbs).
Add 1 part Lemon Verbena or mint leaves, (this is the aromatic) and 1 part Solomon’s Seal root, (this is the demulcent).
Decoct 2 teaspoons of these herbs in 2 cups of water, boil for ten minutes, then strain and drink mixture, or about 2 cups, add honey or sugar if desired.
Place any remaining herbs in a dark colored bottle and store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. Don’t forget to label the bottle, a little masking tape works fine.
Recipe, Colds and Fever:
1 part Hyssop, 1 part Sage and 1 part Chamomile or Catnip
1 part Ginger
1 part Comfrey root
Either make as an Infusion…pour boiling water over herb mixture, let set 5 minutes, strain and drink 1 cup every hour or…make a decoction as above (which will be a little stronger) and drink 1 cup every 3 hours.
Recipe, to relax and help with sleep:
1 part Valerian root, 1 part Skullcap leaves or stems and 1 part Chamomile flowers (or Hops). Add 1 part Cloves, and/or Orange peel and 1 part Arrowroot.
Infuse 1 tsp. of herbs in 1 cup of boiling water. Strain and sweeten if desired. Drink 1 or two cups.
